New Mexico Veterans Counseling and Therapy Project (NMVC&TP)

Program Description

The New Mexico Veterans Counseling and Therapy Project is a state wide behavioral health project that provides New Mexico’s Veterans mental health services at no cost.  This first of its’ kind program, provides quality outpatient mental health treatment to Veterans or their family for a minimum of one year.  This community based project is a collaborative effort between the Regulation and Licensing Department, Board of Social Work Examiners, Board of Psychologist Examiners Counseling and Therapy Practice Board, NM Human Services Department, Behavioral, Behavioral Health Services Division, NM Department of Veterans Services, Access To Recovery Network and Presbyterian Medical Services.

Veterans who have served in military conflicts suffer from service connected injuries and debilitating psychological conditions.  The reintegration challenges can result from conditions such as anxiety disorders, adjustment disorders, post traumatic stress disorder or traumatic brain injury. It is the aim of this program to increase availability of mental health services to veterans who are currently not receiving services due to a variety of reasons such as:

  • A lack of confidence in the VA System of care.
  • The belief that they are not eligible for VA services.
  • Previous failures accessing and navigating the system.
  • Transportation barriers – live too far from VA facilities or clinics.
  • Veteran families members who are not eligible for VA services.
  • The stigma related with mental health care.

This program aims to increase access to behavioral health care by providing an outpatient, community based alternative or option.   This state wide project has pulled together a team of highly qualified, licensed practitioners, who want to “give something back” to our Veterans by providing valuable behavioral health services to the men and women who have already made the sacrifice, to secure our nations future.  The services are available in every county of New Mexico.
